Niederau and the Wildschonau
The three picturesque alpine villages of Niederau, Oberau and Auffach, at nearly 1000 meters above sea level nestle in one of Austria’s most beautiful valleys known as the Wildschonau. Niederau has enjoyed an enviable reputation for more than half a century as a friendly, safe, convenient and generally snow sure resort ideal for families, beginners and early intermediates. There are a number of hotels and guest houses scattered around a small village centre which also has a ski shop, a number of ski hire outlets, bars, restaurants and a bank. Close by are two large supermarkets and a garage.
Apres Ski in Niederau is pretty relaxed and informal. As well as a number of hotel bars there are a scattering of Apres Ski bars close to the slopes – currently Bobo’s, the Schnapshutte, Treff, Gunters, the White Rabbit and O’Malley’s Irish bar. The Treff, Gunters, White Rabbit and O’Malleys stay open till after midnight. There are two nightclubs in Niederau – the Dorfstubbe and, most famously the Cave Bar – a Niederau institution celebrating it’s 26th anniversary this winter.
Local excursions include a great daytime toboggan run in Auffach – simply hire a sledge and take the gondola to the middle station and a floodlit ride booked at the local travel agency in the village. There is also a traditional Austrian sleigh ride trip.
The resorts main ski lifts and nursery slopes are less than 150 meters from the hotel and apart from crossing a main road our guests can ski back to the door of the Staffler for most of the season. The resort villages of Oberau and Auffach are easily accessible by local complimentary ski bus.
The Wildschonau is just 15 minutes from the town of Worgl. With it’s main line station and direct access to the motorways there are simple and fast connections to Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich.
